April Showers Bring More Car Accidents – How Rain-soaked Roads Increase Crash Risks

March 27, 2025

Flowers aren't the only things that thrive in spring's increased rainfall; accidents do, too. According to the Federal Highway Administration, rain contributes to approximately 10% of all vehicle crashes in the U.S. That's about 556K incidents annually.

While everyone understands the risks of slippery roads and hydroplaning, reduced visibility, longer stopping distances, and driver overconfidence also play significant roles in the increase in accidents. The best steps you can take before the clouds arrive are to check your tire tread depth and wiper blades. Applying rain repellents like Rain-X can also help improve visibility during our infamous pop-up storms.

Baton Rouge’s mix of highways, bridges, construction zones, and congested streets, combined with poor drainage in some areas, can make rainy-day driving even more treacherous.

QUICK TIPS FOR RAINY CONDITIONS

  1. Slow down and increase your following distance.

  2. Use headlights (but avoid high beams in heavy rain).

  3. Check tires and windshield wipers regularly to ensure they’re in good condition.

  4. Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns to reduce the risk of skidding.

  5. Be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses, which can be more slippery.

  6. Remember: Roads are at their slickest at the first onset of rain due to oil buildup mixing with water.

In the event of a rain-induced collision, move to a safe location if possible and check for injuries. Once you are safely off the road, call 911. Even minor accidents should be reported to local law enforcement. Document the scene and road conditions and be sure to exchange information with other drivers and witnesses.

After reporting the accident to the police, seek medical attention. Not all injuries are immediately apparent, and a quick check ensures your well-being while also strengthening any potential injury claim.
